WELCOME to the 2012 Cumbrian & Lakeland sportives and we hope you have a great day riding in this wonderful part of the southern
LAKE DISTRICT.


                                        


Rider Numbers
Will be issued at registration and must be attached to your handlebars with zip ties provided so that it is in full view and visible to event officials and the photographer.

THE HIGHWAY CODE MUST BE OBEYED AT ALL TIMES, NO HELMET NO RIDE!!!!


Event centre
Will open be open between  0700 and 0900 on the Sunday morning and is situated at Dallam School Sports Hall, Haverflatts Lane, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, LA7 7DD.
If you use the postcode in a satnav, please note that this directs you to the old front entrance to the school. The car parks and sports hall are to the rear of the school via the new main entrance.

Please follow the car parking signs which will lead you to the Sports Hall  and registration is in the MAIN HALL.
The start and finish areas for the events are just outside the HQ and will be clearly marked and signposted. There are plenty of toilets and hot showers that are available to all riders.

CAR PARKING  
Are less than 100 meters from HQ and start area. There is a huge area so no worries about parking, just follow the marshals instructions to your car parking spot.

REGISTRATION AND TIMING CHIPS
Registration will be a very simple and quick procedure, just collect your timing chip from the SPORTident desk in the main hall where several tables will be arranged and your timing chips will be under your surnames.
The course maps will be displayed on the wall and any last minute information will be shown on the white board situated in the main hall.

MAPS AND ROUTE CARDS—AVAILABLE AT REGISTRATION
Full interactive route maps via MapMyRide can be downloaded from the event website at www.sportivebike.com. A map and route card will also be provided at registration and we advise that your study the route before you set off and ask questions of staff if any queries arise.

START

The Cumbrian Sportive
The event will start at 0800 and all you need do is scan your chip at the start to set the clocks running and you are away. All riders must be away by 0900.

The Lakeland Sportive
The event will start at 0900 and all you need do is scan your chip at the start to set the clocks running and you are away. All riders must be away by 1000.


FIRST AID kits will be carried by all support vehicles

Support Vehicles
A lead vehicle will start 30 minutes before the event to check the route with a back up vehicle, carrying water, spares and tools will follow the last rider and respond to events on route as and when required.

Gearing—as low as possible as this is the big country! A compact chainset or triple is recommended with at least a 25 rear sprocket. Local riders will regularly run a 27, 28, 30 or even a 32, so please do not underestimate the difficulty of some of these climbs.

CHECKPOINTS, CUT OFF TIMES AND SHORT CUTS.


If you don’t make Cockley Beck at the foot of Hardknott pass by 12.30 we will be closing down the route and signage will be removed and  riders will be left with  the 75miler by heading south down the beautiful Duddon valley [mostly flat] and pick up the main route after circa 5miles@Ulpha.

PLEASE DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE SEVERITY OF THIS SECTION!! THE ORGANISER RESERVE THE RIGHT IN THE EVENT OF EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS OR ANY SAFETY ISSUES THAT COULD AFFECT RIDERS OR THE PUBLIC TO CHANGE/AMEND THE COURSES.

WAYMARKING - The whole route will be marked with yellow signs with black arrows and do not stray from the main course and to reassure you we intend to put extra comfort arrows out at key places and they will be triple checked prior to the ride. Please note that we have experienced signage being removed in past events. Make sure you are aware of the route and check your route card if you suspect you have missed a way point.

MARSHALS
WILL BE PLACED AT CRITICAL JUNCTIONS ONLY AS A SAFETY MEASURE AND WILL BE INSTRUCTED UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TO HOLD UP OR DIRECT TRAFFIC.

FEEDING ARRANGEMENTS
Although we will ensure adequate food is laid on for all riders you are strongly advised to take some emergency supplies with you as this is a long and tough day in the saddle.

The Cumbrian


Grasmere Youth hostel @35 miles
This is situated at the top of Red Bank and we plan to offer water, bananas, malt loaf, buscuits PLUS tea and coffee

Lowick Village Hall @ 70 miles.
Still some tough country and hills to cross so fill up your water bottles and enjoy biscuits and bananas, malt loaf plus tea, coffee and soup.

The Lakeland

Hawkshead Village @ 30 miles
We plan to offer water, bananas, malt loaf, biscuits


FINISH  
Once you finish please ensure you scan your timing chip for last time and receive your finishing slip which will indicate split times and standard achieved and then ensure you hand in your chip to avoid a £25 fine.
Hot food can be purchased for a very reasonable price from Cathys Country Kitchen in front of the main hall so make sure you refuel fully before the drive home!

Emergencies

IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF A SERIOUS ROAD ACCIDENT YOU SHOULD CALL THE EMERGENCY SERVICES ON 999
OR MINOR INCIDENTS RING 07815 023984


Each feed station AND support vehicles will have a small stock of inner tubes chain lube and a track pump and some tyres,  if you use these facilities please pay for them at the finish area before leaving for home

Your bike
Please make sure it is in good working order particularly brakes, tyres and ensure you carry spare tubes and a chain riveter plus pump.

FOLLOWING VEHICLES

Are strictly banned as the roads in the main are relatively narrow and single lane.

Important safety notes

Take particular care on descent into Ambleside down the struggle as T junction can be very busy with traffic.
There are many steep and difficult technical descents on the route with traffic descending and ascending so take care at all times. When crossing Lowick common there is a gate across the road, please open and close behind you.
In several places the roads are very narrow with occasional high walls, so please be very careful when navigating these roads
